Bible Study

This is for a Bible study that my friend Andy and I have on most Friday nights. If anyone would like to tackle some of these questions, please do.

Our questions for this week are from Genesis chapters 4-6

Chapter 4

1. 4:3-4 Cain brought an offering but Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock, does this mean Abel put more thought and effort into his offering?

2. 4:4-5 Why did God have respect unto Abel's offering and not Cains?

3. 4:7 Explain verse 7:

4. 4:8 Do you think that Abel was being proud and this only helped to kindle the flame of hatred in Cain?

5. 4:15 Why did God promise Cain revenge sevenfold?

6. 4:17 & 5:19 Were Cain's son Enoch and Jared's son Enoch two different people?

7.4:23-24 What is the point of verse 23? Who did Lamech kill? Why does Lamech get more revenge for his death than Cain?

8. 4:26 Why does the Bible mention that men began to call upon the name of the Lord after Seth begat Enos?

Chapter 5

1. 5:2 Who are they? Why did God call their name Adam?

2. 5:22-24 What does Enoch walked with God mean? Do you believe Enoch died? Why Enoch?

3. 5:29 Explain verse 29 about Noah:

Chapter 6

1. 6:2 Who are the sons of God and why are they the sons of God?

2. 6:3 Why did God say mans years shall be 120? and Why have there been people that have lived longer than that?

3. 6:6 Why would God make something he repented of?

4. 6:9 Was Noah perfect? Did Noah walk with God as Enoch did?

5. 6:17 If the point of the flood was to "destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die" What about the water dwelling creatures? Does the breath of life apply only to humans?

6. 6:21 Did Noah have to take every sort of fruit ang vegatable to preserve it?

Chapter 4

1. 4:3-4 Cain brought an offering but Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock, does this mean Abel put more thought and effort into his offering?
Answer: Yes. Let’s look at the nature of the offerings:
Genesis 4:3-4 “Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. “
Cain’s was simply from the “fruit of the ground” and Abel’s was from the “firstlings of his flock” It’s not fully clear here that what Cain brought wasn’t his best, yet also, it was the “fruit of the ground” So even though he may have worked and toiled at this fruit, it was of the ground. I think this is more of a reference of where the effort was, it was “of the ground” so I think that it was not Cain’s best. Or it would have been said that Cain brought his first fruits. Abel brought his “firstlings” something that was given much effort to. Later in the Bible we find that God asks for the “first fruits” of all that we have, not simply something less or of no effort. I believe that Cain brought something less than his “first fruits”, simply the neglected “fruit of the ground”.

2. 4:4-5 Why did God have respect unto Abel's offering and not Cain’s?
Answer: We see in
Genesis 3:21 it says:
“21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”
This was to cover a sin, the sin of the shame of nakedness, and in many ways the first offering. And because God did this, it set the tone for everything else. Cain and Able had different callings, different jobs to do. And trade should have been going on at the time; some fruit for a sheep and etc… I’d also like to point out that
Genesis 4:5 “5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.”
This was not only toward Cain’s offering, but also toward Cain himself. The wording here is directed both to Cain and his offering. So I believe that Cain didn’t have a right motive in bringing this offering, and also had a vain offering as he brought not an offering of animal, which would have had blood to shed, but an offering of the, if not less, secondary fruit he farmed.

3. 4:7 Explain verse 7:
This one takes a bit of explanation. I will if someone wants me to.

4. 4:8 Do you think that Abel was being proud and this only helped to kindle the flame of hatred in Cain?
Answer: In most ways I’m not sure. But I think not.
Genesis 4:8 “8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.”
Cain talked to Abel, perhaps to blind site him into thinking that he didn’t have a problem with him, and maybe to find out when he’d be in the field. So that he might hide in the field to kill him. I think it was premeditated, not provoked.

5. 4:15 Why did God promise Cain revenge sevenfold?
Answer: We see in verse 15 the word “Therefore” this denotes a dependant clause. What is this clause dependant on?
Genesis 4:13-14 “13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.”

6. 4:17 & 5:19 Were Cain's son Enoch and Jared's son Enoch two different people?
Answer: Do you have to ask? Yes, they are two different people.

I will have the rest later.
